My Dream Workshop: It Begins…
I've dreamed of this moment for as long as I can remember. In my young adult life, I envisioned a space, a sanctuary, where I could tinker, create, and escape.
Now, in my thirties, the dream is becoming a reality: a 30 by 60 foot workshop with lots of covered open outdoor space and a compact enclosed area.
This isn't just about a building; it's about crafting a universe of possibilities. It's a place where the scent of sawdust and the hum of machinery fills the air. A space where hands can transform raw materials into something tangible, beautiful, and functional.
Features of the Workshop
Below is a concept from architecture called ‘program”, which, put simply, is what happens on or within a building, site, or wider area.
It's the activities and functions of the building - from the everyday public activities to the periodic maintenance requirements. In practice, program often refers more specifically to how the elements, zones and spaces are organized.
Each bubble represents different areas where certain activities take place
Workshop Program
Artist’s Haven
I'm excited about transforming this space into an artist's haven. My past homes, with their cramped quarters, have stifled the opportunity to create on a larger scale. Imagine the freedom to splatter paint without fear of ruining a wall, or to sculpt without worrying about space limitations? It's a thrilling prospect to have a dedicated area where I can experiment, make mistakes, and ultimately, create without boundaries.
Woodworking
Woodworking has been a love affair that has blossomed over the years. There’s an intrinsic satisfaction in shaping something from a lifeless block of wood. I've spent countless hours in cramped garages and makeshift workspaces, but I’ve always longed for a dedicated space. This workshop will be a creative cathedral, a place where I can explore different techniques, experiment with designs, and bring my woodworking visions to life.
I envision a space filled with an array of tools, from hand planes to jointers, band saws to planers. There will be an easy to clean area dedicated for finishing with stains, varnishes, and waxes. And, of course, there will be ample storage for lumber, hardware, and project materials.
3D Printing
Beyond woodworking, I'm excited to have a larger space to continue designing 3D printed products (much like the ones available for purchase off this website). A vented, climate controlled area of the workshop will be dedicated to our 3D printers, allowing us to experiment and innovate.
RV Storage and Beyond
A significant portion of the workshop will be dedicated to storing my RV. The RV is the farm office and it will be nice to have a sheltered space to store it.
Farm Life Aspirations
I've always had a soft spot for animals, and this property offers an opportunity to introduce some furry (or feathered) friends into my life. I'm considering a small flock of chickens for fresh eggs, and perhaps a goat or two. There will be a small area for a compact tack collection (or at least that’s the idea!) and a warm safe place for the farm cats and dogs to hang out with me while I’m working.
Things to Consider
While the prospect of building my dream workshop is exhilarating, I'm also aware of the challenges ahead. The land is raw, and the soil is primarily sand. This means significant groundwork, including leveling and potentially bringing in fill dirt. It's a daunting task, but I'm determined to overcome these obstacles.
I'll be hiring a professional to assess the land and provide recommendations for grading. I'll also need to research soil stabilization techniques to prevent erosion and ensure a solid foundation for the workshop. It's going to be a learning process, but I'm excited to tackle the challenges and transform the land into a functional and beautiful space.
